ART STUDIO VISUAL ARTS 8 to 10:  These foundation art courses are designed as introductions to understanding, appreciating and creating art. Students will gain skills in responding to art in an informed manner so they further their knowledge of the meaning, place and value of art in both our local and global communities. They will have the opportunity to work in a variety of materials, including pencil, pencil crayon, clay, watercolour and acrylic painting. These are fun, creative courses that allow students to express themselves with the skills they acquire. All artwork is created in class and all art materials are supplied. No prerequisite is required.


ART STUDIO 11 and 12: Foundations 11 and 12 art course is designed to further develop students’ skills in the following areas of study, using art media that includes: pencil, watercolour painting, acrylic painting, pencil crayon, pastel, charcoal and markers. This is a fun, skill-based course that gives students the opportunity to express themselves creatively. All artwork is created in class and all art materials are supplied. No prerequisites is required.


DRAWING & PAINTING STUDIO ART 11 and 12: This art courses is designed to give students the opportunity to further develop their skills in 2-D materials, including pencil drawing, oil pastel, charcoal, conte, pen and ink, acrylic and watercolour painting. Students are encouraged to explore their own ideas, using a wide range of subject matter and materials. Working with the elements and principle of design, students will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and develop personal responses to their surrounding environment. This is a fun, creative course, yet there is also a serious inquiry-based aspect to it for those who are planning a post-secondary career in the visual arts. Drawing/Painting 11/12 will help prepare students for post-secondary art studies that lead to arts related professions in graphics, animation, computer game design, interior design, fashion design and illustration. All materials are supplied. No prerequisite is required.


DRAWING & PAINTING STUDIO ART 9 and 10: This art course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop their skills in 2-D materials, including pencil drawing, oil pastel, charcoal, conte, pen and ink, acrylic and watercolour painting. Students will develop their observational, critical, and artistic skills through a fun and creative art-making process. Using the elements and principals of design, students will be encouraged to develop strong decision-making skills and personal responses to their environment. All materials are supplied and there is no prerequisite for this course.


ART STUDIO VISUAL ARTS 8:  This is a fun, general art survey course designed as an introduction to creating and understanding art. Students will work with a variety of materials and mediums to develop basic skills, techniques and creativity. Exploring the principles of art and design, students will use everything from pencil, pencil crayons and pastel to charcoal, clay and acrylic paints. All art work is done in class and all materials are supplied. There is no prerequisite for this course.


PHOTOGRAPHY 11 AND 12: This course in an introductory course on the basics of digital photography and how to enhance and alter images using Adobe Photoshop. Through lectures, field trips and critiques, students will learn how the digital SLR camera works and how to take the best images possible using the principles of successful picture-making. Students will learn the technical side of photography while at the same time develop their artistic and compositional skills. All students have the opportunity to work with Nikon DSLR cameras, which are supplied. There is no prerequisite for this course.


AP 2D ART & DESIGN 12: This is a first year university level studio art course offered by the College Board. It allows dedicated students to create an in- depth body of 15 pieces of artwork to submit in their AP portfolio. 2D Design students may work with a variety of media and techniques including:  graphic design, digital imaging, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and mixed media. This course is designed for the advanced art student who has a creative imagination, enjoys the challenge of self-expression and has a command of two- dimensional design processes. It is recommended that students take Art 11 Honours, Photography 11 or Art 11 as a pre-requisite course.


AP STUDIO ART DRAWING 12:  This is a first-year university level studio art course offered by the College Board. It allows dedicated students to create an in-depth body of 15 pieces of artwork to submit in their AP portfolio. AP drawing issues that students need to demonstrate include:  line quality, light and shade, rendering form, composition, surface manipulation, illusion of depth and mark making. A variety of media from traditional drawing or painting materials to digital imaging is welcome. This course is designed for the advanced art student who has a creative imagination, enjoys the challenge of self-expression and has a command of drawing and painting art processes. It is recommended that students take Art 11 Honours, Drawing and Painting 11 or Art 11 as a pre-requisite course.


AP 3D ART & DESIGN 12: This is a first-year university level studio art course offered by the College Board. It allows dedicated students to create an in-depth body of 15 three dimensional artworks to submit in their AP portfolios. A variety of media and processes could include: clayworks, pottery, papier mache, wood, carving, found object assemblage, figurative or non-figurative sculpture, architectural models and/or installations. This course is designed for the advanced 3D art student who has a creative imagination, enjoys the challenge of self-expression and has a command of 3D art processes. It is recommended that students take Ceramics and Sculpture 11 or Art 11 as pre-requisite courses.


CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE: STUDIO ARTS 9 & 10: This course is for students who like to express themselves through working on projects three dimensionally. Students will use a variety of materials such as clay, foam, cardboard, wire, found objects and soapstone. Students may sculpt animal forms, the human figure, masks, caricatures as well as their own 3D ideas. Everyone is welcome. No prerequisites required.


CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE: STUDIO ARTS 11 &12: Students in this course will work on individual sculptural projects. The course is divided into two main areas of studio work:  Ceramics, which includes handbuilding in clay or pottery and Sculpture, which includes sculptural techniques and materials such as paper mache, styrofoam carvings, wood assemblage, wire and recyclable materials. Students are evaluated on their projects and in-class participation; there is no homework because of the nature of materials supplied in class. All senior students are welcome to take this hands-on course. No prerequisites are required.


ART STUDIO 10 & 11 HONOURS: This course is for art students who have had experience in visual art and would like to further their development in self-expression, using visual art media. Students will have the opportunity to work with materials and processes such as charcoal, watercolour and acrylic paint, inks, relief printmaking, mixed media, oil pastel, markers and sculptural media. Dedicated honour students with their sights on post-secondary art studies and careers may wish to take Advanced Placement art studio courses after taking Visual Art 11 Honours. It is recommended that students have taken a previous visual art class such as  Art 9 or 10, Drawing and Painting 9 or 10 and/or Ceramics and Sculpture 9 or 10.


ART LEADERSHIP 11 & 12 This leadership course provides students with the opportunity to acquire practical skills, knowledge and experience in all aspects of visual arts.  Students will create artworks and posters, help select and  prepare art for display, set up and take down displays of artworks around the school, and maintain art supplies and equipment. Students will work with teacher supervision and will be expected to demonstrate self-initiative and be committed to the visual art program. Students will be evaluated on:  attendance,  responsibility, participation, effort, and attitude. No prerequisites required.
